"Big Spring" or Kitchitikippee, is a true wonder. It's about 45 minutes or so from Sall-Mar. The spring itself is 200 feet across and 45 feet deep. Over 10,000 gallons of water per minute flow from the bubbling bottom with a constant temperature of 45 degrees. You will very likely see fish swimming like Rainbow Trout such as the one seen in my video. Pulling yourself out by hand on the giant raft just adds to the fun! The center of the raft is open making it incredibly easy to view the springs on the bottom as well as the fish. Michigan State Park motor vehicle permit required for entry. Residents:$6.00 (Daily)Non-residents:$8.00 (Daily)
You can easily see all these waterfalls in one day. There are even more waterfalls than what is seen in the video, but I have not had time to visit them all myself! They look most impressive in spring and early summer before the effects of snowmelt and spring rains dwindle.
The Iron Mine Tour is about a 50 minute drive west from Sall-Mar. It costs $10.00 per person and is worth every penny! You will want to wear a light spring jacket as the temperature 400 feet under ground is only about 40 degrees. It does not show in the video, but there is a hole inside the mine that the Empire State Building will fit in!!! You will also see bats hanging from the ceiling. Maybe have a few fly over your shoulder while on your tour too...
The park is about a 45 minute ride from us. Fayette Historic State Park houses an Historic Townsite, a representation of a once bustling industrial community. On the second Saturday of August, the annual Heritage Day celebrates Fayette as a bustling iron smelting company town.
The DeYoung Family Zoo is nestled in the wilderness of the beautiful Upper Peninsula. This is NOT a big city zoo, step out of the box, away from the concrete jungle and come along on a new journey. You will love the natural setting filled with amazing animals from around the world. Large natural habitats, education through hands-on experiences, as well as up close and personal family fun! It’s all waiting for you at the DeYoung Family Zoo!

Pier's Gorge - just a 45 minute ride west of us. Something to take in on your way to the Iron Mine Tour. The big Menominee River has cut a deep, dramatic gorge where the river, normally 300 feet wide, is constricted to a narrow 80-foot channel, creating powerful rapids of foaming water as it rushes towards Green Bay. A popular spot for white water rafting and kayaking.
